PROTECTION OF PERSONAL INFORMATION BILL
The Protection of Personal Information Bill, approved by the Cabinet, is now in the throes of being processed through its consultation phases before presentation to parliament. It will have a far-reaching impact on those businesses, particularly, that have sophisticated CRM systems which make use of clients’ personal information. The Bill aims to ensure that individual people retain control of how their personal information is collected, stored, shared or used in any other way by other organizations. Among the likely provisions, for example, are that:
- personal information is collected only from the individual with the individual’s express consent,
- the individual is informed of the specific purpose for which the information is required,
- the information is not distributed for any other purpose without consent,
- technical and organizational measures are put in place to ensure the information is protected and cannot be accessed by unauthorized people,
- companies must appoint an Information Protection Officer.
