Public Image Is A Package |

Most businesses have well-groomed, well-spoken people at their front desks – few businesses would dream of having someone at reception who is well spoken but not well groomed, or well groomed but not well spoken. This proves a simple point: most businesses appreciate the fact that public image is a package deal. Omit or neglect certain components and the package has less appeal. And unattractive packaging doesn’t sell very well to discerning consumers. Many businesses spend thousands of rands on websites, brochures and eye-catching billboards and signage; and they may be good communicators, keeping in touch with customers/clients, attending to correspondence promptly, etc. Yet some of these same businesses will not always take the trouble to ensure that the written texts involved are as good as they could be. This simply means that part of the “packaging” is defective, and while many consumers are unlikely to be deterred by that, or even notice it, for others it may send a message that the businesses concerned do not care about detail all the way. I would like to try and contribute something towards helping businesses with the language aspect of their public image packaging. Over the next few weeks I will highlight some language-related errors one sees from time to time in different kinds of business texts. I trust my brief notes will be of some use to businesses who take pride in aiming to present as polished a public image as possible in every respect. Zero defect is always a worthy goal to pursue.
