And the name of our province is … In my PCB blog “Public image is a package” (11 August) I wrote: “I would like to try and contribute something towards helping businesses with the language aspect of their public image packaging. (…) I trust my brief notes will be of some use to businesses who take pride in aiming to present as polished a public image as possible in every respect.” So here goes … KZN … spelling it out There is only one correct way to write our province’s name, and this is it: KwaZulu-Natal. All other forms, like Kwazulu-Natal, Kwa Zulu Natal and KwaZulu/Natal, are incorrect. Some things are simply non-negotiable, and correct spelling is one of them, including the spelling of names. If I had a business called Peter’s Plumbing, that is how I would want it written, not as Peters Plumbing, Peters’ Plumbing or Peter’s Plumming. Similarly, Makro is not Macro, and Truworths is not Truworth’s or Trueworths. And KwaZulu-Natal is KwaZulu-Natal, nothing else. (Note: My “Write thinking” blog (http://nickywrites.blogspot.com) published on 26th August deals with the spelling of KwaZulu-Natal in more detail, as I explain there why it has to be the way it is.)
