I hope someone in the administration of our local university who cares enough about public image read my blog about the correct way to write KwaZulu-Natal last Friday (26th August), because it is misspelt on some of the signs bearing the university’s name in and around Scottsville. How can a tertiary institution tolerate, for even one day, the misspelling of a part of its name in public places? I contacted the office responsible for such matters several years ago and urged the person I spoke to please to have the faulty signs corrected, but nothing was done and those eyesores still exist. Another instance of incongruity: A “To Let” sign of a major local letting agent says something like “Office suites to let in this prestigeous development.” My thought when I first saw the sign was, “If it’s that prestigious, could the company not at least ensure that the word ‘prestigious’ is spelt correctly?” I’m sounding negative, and I really don’t mean to. I’m simply trying to underline the point that public image is a package deal – and language is usually a part of the package. I’ll end on a positive note: I was very pleased to see one of our leading city restaurants get the use of the apostrophe right where others often get it wrong when it recently advertised a “Ladies’ Buffet Lunch”.
