Melanie Veness: PCB CEO I have been told that there are almost as many people living in and around the Edendale Valley, as there are other citizens of the city, and it is thertefore about time that we see this kind of development taking place there. In fact, the figures make so much sense that it is surprising it has taken so long for it to happen. There is no question that Edendale needs a regional shopping center and that residents deserve one, and this ultra smart development will no doubt contribute significantly to the general upgrading of the area and, almost certainly, will stimulate further investment. What I am most excited about, however, is the link between development and job creation, and this project is no exception. Aside from the jobs created during the construction phase, I have been told that the mall will create over a thousand new jobs. This will have a positive impact on many lives, in an area where unemployment levels are unacceptably high. The site selected by the developers is centrally situated in Edendale and is conveniently located to other amenities. These include the hospital and police station, and the improved commuter transport services that are certain to improve the quality of life of all of Edendale's residents. Apart from the convenient location of this new facility, residents are bound to find the shopping experience cheaper and more convenient. Living in the suburbs, one tends to take this kind of convenience for granted, and we shouldn’t underestimate its importance. Consider spending a disproportionate amount of one's income on transport to and from banks and retail outlets, only to have to lug one's parcels and groceries from one taxi to another. Not only will the Edendale Mall offer a more convenient facility for adults to conduct their business, it will also hopefully offer a safer place for young people to meet than on streets. But the Edendale Mall will do more than just provide tangible evidence of development; it will also infuse pride in one of the city's historically underdeveloped areas and signal the start of a new paradigm to address the skewed development in the city. |
